Knight Dermatology - Laser Treatments

What is laser therapy?

Laser therapy treats aesthetic complaints such as discoloration, sagging skin, and lines and wrinkles. Depending on how it’s applied, laser therapy can dissolve hyperpigmentation, remove unwanted hair, smooth scars and rough skin texture, and tighten sagging skin.

If you have aesthetic concerns related to your face or body, talk to the providers at Knight Dermatology, to see how laser treatment could help.

IPL Laser at Knight Dermatology

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. While almost everyone refers to it as an “IPL laser” (even some med-spas!), it is technically not a laser at all.

It is a light-based skin therapy used primarily to treat color irregularities in the skin—like redness, brown spots, and unwanted hair—rather than structural issues like deep wrinkles.

How is IPL different from Lasers?

To understand IPL, it helps to understand how it differs from a true laser:

  • A true laser uses one single, highly focused wavelength of light (like a laser pointer). It targets one very specific thing in the skin, making it a highly precise “sniper.”
  • IPL uses a broad spectrum of light with multiple wavelengths (more like a powerful camera flash). Because the light is scattered, it can treat multiple skin issues—like both redness and brown spots—at the exact same time. It acts more like a “shotgun.”

What is IPL used for?

Because it uses multiple wavelengths of light, IPL is an excellent multitasker. It is most commonly used for:

  • Photofacials: Reversing sun damage, sun spots, and age spots.
  • Vascular issues: Calming the generalized redness of rosacea, and eliminating broken capillaries or spider veins.
  • Hyperpigmentation: Fading freckles and birthmarks.
  • Hair removal: Destroying the hair follicle to prevent regrowth (though dedicated true lasers are generally considered more effective for hair removal today).

What should I expect during laser treatment?

During a laser treatment, you might experience some minor discomfort, but that should only last for a short time. For some procedures, you may elect to have a topical numbing cream applied to treatment areas prior to your session to ease sensation. The laser treatment system is safe for all skin types.

Depending on your specific treatment and aesthetic goals, you’ll likely need multiple treatment sessions to achieve optimal results — typically four to six visits.

Am i right candidate for IPL laser?

Because IPL is designed to seek out and destroy melanin (dark pigment), it is generally only safe for lighter skin tones. On naturally dark or deeply tanned skin, the machine cannot easily distinguish between an unwanted sun spot and the natural dark pigment of the skin.
