What is rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition characterized by redness or flushing on the cheeks, nose, chin, or forehead. You may have flare-ups and periods of remission that, over time, become more persistent and darker.

In some cases, rosacea appears as inflammatory bumps and pimples. In men, rosacea may lead to changes in the nose shape as it becomes swollen and bumpy from excess tissue. People with rosacea may also have symptoms that make their eyes appear bloodshot and watery.

What causes rosacea?

Rosacea affects men and women. The condition seems to run in families and can be aggravated by a number of factors, including:

• Hormonal changes
• Steroid creams
• Ultraviolet rays
• Extreme temperature conditions
• Pregnancy
• Facials

People with fair skin are usually most affected by rosacea.

How is rosacea treated?

The symptoms of rosacea don’t have to be tolerated or simply masked by makeup. At Knight Dermatology Institute, the team may recommend the Candela® VBeam 595nm Pulsed Dye Laser for treating rosacea.

This laser is considered the gold standard treatment to resolve the obvious veins and ruddiness of the condition. The light is concentrated and precise. During treatment, laser energy is applied in brief pulses to the areas affected by rosacea. The laser works to seal reddened facial veins so they’re reabsorbed by the body and disappear.

The laser treatment takes just about 10 minutes and is relatively pain-free. It feels like small rubber bands snapping against the skin. You don’t need to take any downtime following rosacea treatment. You can go right back to work or school after a session.

How many treatments with Candela® VBeam will I need?

Most patients benefit from one to three 10-minute rosacea treatments. These treatments are usually spaced four to six weeks apart. Your provider develops a specific plan customized to your skin’s needs and the severity of rosacea.

Does laser treatment for rosacea have side effects?

Candela® VBeam laser treatment for rosacea results in very few side effects. Men and women may experience slight bruising, swelling, or redness in the treated areas, but this resolves fairly quickly on its own. In rare cases, you may experience slight scabbing, tenderness, or temporary skin darkening.
