While people have many reasons
for acquiring tattoos, people
have just as many reasons for
wanting them removed. It is estimated
that nearly 20 percent of people
who have tattoos want them removed.
Fortunately, it is possible to
successfully remove the unwanted
pigment.
Laser Tattoo Removal
The most utilized laser tattoo
removal treatment option involves
Q-switched lasers. Pulses of infrared
and visible light are used to
target the pigment. The rapidly
traveling light shatters the ink;
the body then uses the immune
system to naturally remove it.
An anesthetic cream is applied
to the skin an hour prior to treatment.
Several treatments are needed
to completely remove tattoos.

Surgical Tattoo Removal
Another method of tattoo removal
is excision, and is best for small
tattoos. Local anesthetic is administered
to the area to be treated, the
tattoo is surgically removed,
and the surrounding edges of skin
are joined and stitched together.
No matter what type of treatment
you select, it is important to
remember that results vary. Not
all tattoos can be completely
removed. The staff at the Knight
Dermatology Institute will be
happy to discuss tattoo removal
with you, and help you decide
on the best treatment regimen.
